A Short-Sighted Approach
The government claims to support British farming, yet these tax changes contradict their own agricultural growth ambitions. Farming requires long-term investment, and many farm businesses operate on tight margins. Slapping them with massive tax bills when passing farms down to the next generation risks destabilising the sector at a time when we should be strengthening domestic food production.
For years, British farmers have battled rising costs, unpredictable weather patterns, and competition from cheap imports. Now, they face yet another burden that could force them to break up their holdings, reducing efficiency and leading to further reliance on imported food. This is not just an issue for farmers, it’s an issue for food security, the economy, and the environment.
Supporting British Farmers, Not Punishing Them
Instead of making life harder for those who put food on our tables, the government should be championing policies that encourage investment in British agriculture. We need more support for sustainable farming practices, better trade protections against substandard imports, and an agricultural policy that values food production as highly as environmental measures.
Britain’s farmers deserve better than a government that claims to back them while quietly making it harder to survive. We urge policymakers to rethink these damaging proposals before it’s too late. British farming needs protection, not punishment.
Time to Take a Stand
At S. Thorogood & Sons, we have always supported those who grow our food. We will continue to stand with British farmers, speaking out against policies that threaten their future. Now more than ever, it’s time for the government to listen and act in the best interests of UK agriculture.
If you care about British farming, make your voice heard. Write to your MP, support local producers, and demand that our government stop endangering the future of food production in this country.
British farming is worth fighting for—let’s not let it slip away.
