It’s Back British Farming Day!

Back British Farming Day, Supporting the Heart of Our Food System

Today, 10 September, marks the NFU initiative known as Back British Farming Day. It is a dedicated moment in the calendar to celebrate and advocate for the people who grow our food and steward our countryside. Since its launch in 2015, this annual event has become a focal point for the public and policymakers to show support for British farming.

Why this day matters

Back British Farming Day invites us to pause and recognise the essential role farmers play in feeding the nation, caring for the land and supporting rural communities throughout the year. It is also a timely reminder to government leaders of the economic, cultural and environmental importance of UK agriculture.

In Westminster, MPs wear symbolic wheat sheaf badges to show solidarity. It is a small but powerful visual nod to the sector that keeps our plates full.

Public support for British farming

The latest NFU survey shows just how strongly the public values farming. It consistently ranks as the second most respected profession in the country, just behind nursing. Key findings include:

• 92 percent of respondents say Britain must remain a productive agricultural nation

• 89 percent believe our farms should supply as much of our own food as possible to support national food security

These figures tell a clear story. People care deeply about where their food comes from and want British farming to thrive.

Real challenges on real farms

Despite this strong support, many farm businesses are facing significant pressures. Climate extremes, rising costs and financial instability are already reshaping daily life on the land. Policy uncertainty, including ongoing conversations around inheritance tax and future support schemes, adds another layer of concern for family farms planning for the next generation.

Behind every field and hedgerow there are decisions, risks and hopes that rarely make the headlines.

How we support British farming at S Thorogood and Sons

As a family business rooted in New Covent Garden Market, we are proud to stand alongside the British farmers who supply our shelves and our customers. Our focus is on sourcing from trusted UK growers, supporting sustainable practices and celebrating the stories behind the produce.

Today, we renew that commitment. Across our website, social channels and daily conversations with customers, we are shining a light on British growers and the vital role they play in our food system.

Backing British farming is not limited to a single day. It is woven into how we work, who we buy from and what we believe in.
