New Beginning in New Covent Garden Market

Our Move to Distribution Block B

Last weekend marked an exciting moment for S Thorogood and Sons as we completed our move within New Covent Garden Market to 327 to 329 Distribution Block B. It feels like the start of a fresh chapter in a story that began more than a century ago and continues to unfold across London’s great produce markets.

Our family business officially began trading in 1922, although our farming roots stretch back long before that through generations of growers who cared deeply about the land and the food it produces. Since that first trading presence in Borough Market, produce has shaped our identity and guided our values of quality, service and respect for seasonality.

A long history with New Covent Garden Market

New Covent Garden Market opened for business on 11 November 1974, moving from its historic Covent Garden site to Nine Elms. The official royal opening ceremony followed on 26 June 1975, led by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This move marked a major moment in the life of London’s main wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market, creating a larger purpose built site to serve the growing needs of the city.

S Thorogood and Sons was part of that transition. We are proud to be one of the few remaining traders who have been in New Covent Garden Market since it first opened at Nine Elms. Our history is tied to the market’s story, from those early days of change and optimism right through to the busy nights and mornings of today.

Our new location at 327 to 329 Distribution Block B strengthens this long relationship. It gives us improved space and visibility at the heart of the market while keeping us rooted in a place that has been central to our business for decades.

Part of London’s wider market community

Alongside New Covent Garden Market, we are also based in New Spitalfields Market and Western International Market. These sites allow us to serve a wide range of retailers, greengrocers and catering customers across London and beyond. Across all three markets we continue the same traditions of careful sourcing, strong relationships with growers and dedication to quality produce.

Looking ahead with pride and excitement

Our move within New Covent Garden Market is both practical and symbolic. It represents investment in the future and commitment to remaining at the centre of the fresh produce trade in London. It also reminds us of how far we have come, from early farming beginnings to a trusted wholesale supplier with deep roots in the market community.

We are excited to welcome customers to our new home in Distribution Block B. The same familiar faces, the same commitment to service, and the same focus on excellent seasonal produce will be waiting for you, simply in a fresh location.

Here is to the next chapter for S Thorogood and Sons at New Covent Garden Market and to continuing to bring you the best of British produce from growers we know and trust.
